Queer, isn't it?

One. I gave August a shot. Another gay movie. Old Boy Friend moves back to LA after years away and contacts Past Lover, who's now living with New Boy Friend. OBF makes moves on Past Lover, who still carries a bit of a torch for him. They wind up in bed, threatening the new relationship. When Past Lover asks why Old Boy Friend is suddenly interested after all this time, Old Boy Friend says, "I don't know."

Two. I have an inexplicable affection for actor/director Charlie David.

I keep wanting him to succeed. (Like Kevin Costner.) Don't ask me why. He's too close to the pretty end of the spectrum, but there's something kinda likeable about him. In Judas Kiss*, even though he is disheveled and nervous, it's still obvious that he is a quite handsome fella. He approaches this young thing

and is rebuffed by "the beautiful young Nate" (????), whereupon he chastises himself for punching above his weight and out of his league. After all, how could he, a 7 at most, approach a 9 like Nate?

On what planet? This kid is homely and completely un-built.

Now if it had been

Taylor Lautner is not actually handsome.

Scrunched face.

But he has a great body and, importantly, he got it mostly be being a martial arts fighter.

maybe.

Enough of my shallowness. Time to be deep.

Anonymous said...: There seems to be a theme going on ... a while ago, you detailed a gay bear movie about two guys who nearly got married, and then called it off Just Because. Now, there's a movie about someone trying to restart a relationship because I Dunno.

Prob the filmmakers should take these and some similar movies, and bundle them together as the Depthless Drama Collection.

Anonymous said...: Nathan, anybody who has watched LGBT cinema knows that a lot of it is absolute dreck is either high on gloss and glitter but low on substance, propaganda pieces populated by bright young things, sleazy exploitation pieces that purport themselves as "art," or out-and-out porn masked by production value better than most porn and scripts only slightly more sophisticated than most porn.

LGBT cinema does have some gems, though. Brokeback Mountain ranks high in my mind, mostly because I think it was not made for a specifically gay audience, but a wider one. And whilst it should fall into the first category, I do have a soft spot for Mambo Italiano. Think My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but Italian, with a higher dose of cynicism and snark.

Toward Our Future

What the sons of Europa need is a new religion: one that is as tribal, portable and survivalist as Judaism, as masculine, terrestrial and tough as Islam and as intellectually and aesthetically creative as Christianity...with a dose of the unflinching realism of the ancestral ways of the Greeks and Romans, Germans and Celts and Slavs..And for the larger Indo-European frame, something of the Indian capacity to combine an ultimate and philosophical realization of The One with a robustly mytho-poetic religion on-the-ground. Oh, and some of the psychological acumen of Buddhism.

Liberalism's Basic Flaw

Liberals believe that the chief role of the State is to force everyone to be equal, (ie, take vengeance on the successful). So when they are confronted with any group that they deem less well off than themselves, they are morally disarmed, completely and utterly. Any group that can achieve Victim Status is on their way to power and the (White) liberal's only job is to give them what they want, no matter how much that damages him. And nothing may ever be expected, much less demanded, of them in return. It's a recipe for suicide: no other outcome is possible.
