Pontifications, Euro style

A French Catholic bishop warns against "demonizing all jihadists." Why is it when Western intellectuals wish to rise above the fray (His Grace is a member of the Academie Francaise) they always wind up kissing the ass of their avowed enemies, which enemies never take one step in changing their minds or their directions?

More Talking Pope confusion in yet another interview with an Italian left journalist.  Maybe Popes from now on will no longer write encyclicals, but will give scattershot interviews to people who dislike Catholicism. As usual, Bergoglio's toss-off remarks get headlines. What His Holiness seems to lack almost entirely is the first of the cardinal virtues: prudence. In think that in current parlance the word is "irresponsible."

Your Holiness, is there is a single vision of the Good? And who decides what it is?
"Each of us has a vision of good and of evil. We have to encourage people to move towards what they think is Good."
Your Holiness you wrote that in your letter to me. The conscience is autonomous, you said, and everyone must obey his conscience. I think that's one of the most courageous steps taken by a Pope.
"And I repeat it here. Everyone has his own idea of good and evil and must choose to follow the good and fight evil as he conceives them. That would be enough to make the world a better place."
Sure. No problem. How novel. (Is this man a moron? Does he have no sense at all of how his words will be heard or is he Alice's Humpty Dumpty?)

What he says in his daily ferverinos seems to bear no relation to what he says to journalists.

He did say though, not surprisingly, that since Vatican II, the Church is "open to modern culture." What is "modern culture"? ExC suspects that it begins with the letter L. Ah, yes, adapt yourself to pleasing your cultured despisers. (And they do despise you, Santo Padre, make no mistake about it.) That has worked out so well for every religion that tried it...

I suspect that this particular successor of Peter is the embodiment of The Peter Principle.

I'm truly, totally done with Catholicism. Christianity in general, too. Anything to escape being thrown into the same category as the pope. "Are these the pagans you spoke of? Know your betters and crouch, dogs."
